On Saturday 18th of November, 2023 the Lagos Food Bank Initiative in partnership with Sony Music Group reach out to vulnerable women living in Makoko Community, Lagos with immediate food, nutrition and relief materials through its Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)in commemoration of it annual giving campaign themed ‘Season of Giving’.

The Season of Giving campaign focuses on addressing food insecurity, homelessness and education around the world as part of the company’s ongoing philanthropic commitment to forge partnerships and support communities that need it most, inside and outside the music industry. In their respective communities, each artist and/or songwriter will volunteer with partner organizations in each region where SMG has a presence, impacting more than 3.3 million people.

Among the 2023 campaign’s beneficiaries are the U.K.’s New Horizon Youth Centre, Germany’s Vision for Children, the Lagos Food Bank, Los Angeles’ Alexandria House, Miami’s Overtown Youth Center, Rise Against Hunger in the Philippines and the Santa Shoebox Project in South Africa.

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY

Makoko is an informal settlement across the 3rd Mainland Bridge located on the coast of mainland Lagos. A third of the community is built on stilts along the lagoon and the rest is on the land. The waterfront part of the community is largely harbored by the Egun people who migrated from Badagry and Republic of Benin and whose main occupation is fishing.

GOAL:

The purpose of this outreach is to address the issue of food insecurity in vulnerable communities by providing vulnerable women with  nutritious staple and personal care items capable of sustaining them for a period of  2 to 4 weeks.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To address food insecurity affecting vulnerable families in Makoko community.
  • To improve the health of the older population through proper feeding and to encourage healthy diet.
  • To reduce the effects of hunger by providing  nutritious food and relief materials to vulnerable households to promote healthy living.
