Malnutrition is a significant public health problem faced by many developing countries where it has a great impact on child survival. Almost half of all deaths recorded for children younger than five years have malnutrition as an underlying cause. Therefore, addressing malnutrition in developing countries, including Nigeria, is crucial to improving the health outcomes of young children. This can be achieved through the provision of nutritious foods; education on maternal, infant and young child nutrition practices; and improved access to healthcare; water, sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

As we continue to work towards reducing the prevalence of malnutrition in young children in Lagos State, we are intrigued to share with you the success story of a young boy whose chances of survival have increased through our NUMEPLAN programme at Lagos Food Bank.

At about one year and seven months it was clear that Damilare’s growth was faltering. His mother, filled with concern and determination, sought help and was referred to the Lagos Food Bank from Mafoluku primary health center for nutritional counseling and support. He weighed a mere 6.2 kg and his mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measured an alarming 9.5 cm which shows that he is severely malnourished. With guidance from the compassionate nutrition team at Lagos Food Bank, Damilare’s mother learned crucial nutritional principles and received nutritious food items tailored to his needs. Every visit became a stepping stone towards better health for Damilare.

After eight visits to the Lagos Food Bank, the transformation in Damilare’s health was remarkable. His weight increased significantly, reaching a healthier 8.8 kg. More importantly, his MUAC improved from 9.5 cm to a reassuring 12.7 cm, reflecting his body’s improved nutritional status. Today, Damilare continues to thrive and he now has a brighter, healthier future ahead of him.
