Malnutrition is a significant public health problem faced by many underdeveloped and developing countries where it has a great impact on child survival. Almost half of all deaths recorded for children younger than five years are related to malnutrition. Therefore, addressing malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria, is crucial to improving the health outcomes of young children.

This can be achieved through the provision of nutritious foods; education on maternal, infant and young child nutrition practices; and improved access to healthcare; water, sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

At Lagos Food Bank, we are passionately committed to reducing malnutrition in various communities. We are excited to share the exciting story of Lateef on how he conquered malnutrition through our NUMEPLAN program which provides nutritious food support and tailored counseling for each child.

Lateef was brought to us by his mother after being referred from Odumbatu Primary Health Center. When he arrived at 3 months, he weighed only 4.5 kg and had a MUAC of 10.8 cm.  These measurements coupled with alarming physical signs such as thinness, continuous crying, and dry, wrinkled skin indicated that the child was severely malnourished. After careful assessment of his  nutritional and health status, he was enrolled into the NUMEPLAN program.

For every 2 weeks consecutive visits, his mother received tailored nutrition education and nutritious food items. He gradually gained vitality and his weight increased to 6.2 kg from 3 kg while his mid upper arm circumference was 12.5 cm at 22 months. This story reflect not only the unwavering determination and the support of Lagos Food Bank we also acknowledged the mother for her commitment.  Together, we are transforming lives and providing hope for a brighter future.
