A week of double celebration at the Lagos Food Bank Initiative.
On February 13th, the organization marked its 9th anniversary with the grand launch of a new warehouse, an extension of its facility in Mangoro, Ikeja. This milestone was made possible through the support of The Global Foodbanking Network, PIMCO, and The Rockefeller Foundation. The new warehouse will enhance the Food Bank’s capacity to serve its growing network of partner organizations, community outreach programs, and individuals in need of food assistance.
The launch event was graced by notable figures, including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya; and the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Dr. Laja Odunuga.
In his goodwill message, the Governor commended the Lagos Food Bank Initiative for transforming lives and bringing hope to countless families across Lagos. He stated; “Let the new warehouse stand as a testament to our shared commitment—a reminder that Lagos is not only a city of commerce and industry but also a city of compassion and community.”
The First Lady also delivered a message encouraging youth participation in agriculture to ensure food security for the nation. This was followed by an inspiring speech from the Food Bank’s Executive Director, Dr. Michael Sunbola, who reflected on the organization’s journey—from its humble beginnings at a tiny storehouse on Cement Bus Stop to the launch of its third warehouse. It was a moment of heartfelt reflection and celebration of nine years of impactful service to humanity.
After sharing this inspiring journey, Dr. Michael Sunbola led the way to the new warehouse, where the ribbon-cutting ceremony took place. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, performed the honor, and the doors to the warehouse were opened to loud cheers and resounding applause.
The occasion was also attended by partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders, who shared their experiences with the Food Bank. One beneficiary, fondly called Madam Kuranga, recalled how the Food Bank helped her secure a livelihood through its Family Farming program. Today, she is no longer dependent on the Food Bank or donations from kind-hearted individuals; she is able to take care of herself and her loved ones.
The new warehouse is a significant step in addressing the needs of vulnerable people like Madam Kuranga, who require food and relief items not just to survive but to rebuild their lives. With this launch, the Food Bank is now equipped to reach more vulnerable communities and help combat food insecurity. Additionally, it will provide an opportunity for the Food Bank to collaborate with local food producers and suppliers to reduce food waste by rescuing and redistributing surplus food before it goes to landfills.
It was truly a moment to celebrate, and the event was a tremendous success.
