On October 3rd 2024, Lagos Food Bank Initiative partnered with Mercy Eke to reach out to resilient women through the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) – an initiative that provides women and households with food and essential items needed on a daily basis, taking place at the food bank warehouse – a place that has become a beacon of hope for millions of people.

The day buzzed with excitement upon the arrival of the partner of the day, a well known celebrity with notable positive social impact. “I am indeed excited to finally be a part of the great humanitarian works of the Lagos Food Bank, having been a follower of your impact on social media,” was her words during her opening remarks. After delivering her brief, she engaged herself and her team by packing food boxes along with food bank volunteers, followed by activities that showed a sense of connection with the beneficiaries.

“We are very grateful for this partnership and look forward to more meaningful collaborations to impact thousands of families facing food insecurity,” was the highlight of the Executive Director/Founder of Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Dr. Michael Sunbola, a legal practitioner, food system activist and a humanitarian at heart.

The ambience was filled with excitement as the food boxes were distributed. The women put on their dancing shoes when Mercy reimbursed their transportation cost, upon the realization that they were from different LGAs across Lagos State. The women expressed heartwarming appreciation as they received their tokens. Mrs. Saliu, one of the beneficiaries from Ajegunle Community said; “the food I received here today came at the right time, my children now have something to eat for the coming weeks.”

Lagos Food Bank is poised to reduce hunger and food insecurity by providing food relief through the TEFAP program and a host of others, strategically initiated to target the vulnerable populace. The sustainability of this initiative requires support from both individuals and corporate organizations to reach more people who need critical food support. Overall, the outreach was successful with an impressive turnout of volunteers who came to demonstrate their commitment to community service.
