Malnutrition poses a grave threat to children under five, exacerbating common illnesses like diarrhea, pneumonia, and measles, and significantly increasing the risk of mortality. For those who survive, the consequences can be long-lasting, including diminished productivity and a higher likelihood of developing non-communicable diseases in adulthood. To effectively combat malnutrition, a comprehensive approach is essential—one that encompasses proper nutrition for mothers and children, good caregiving practices, and access to healthcare services.
The Lagos Food Bank is proud to share the inspiring story of a young boy named Dominion, whose journey exemplifies the potential for recovery when malnutrition is addressed promptly. At just six months old, Dominion arrived at the Lagos Food Bank exhibiting alarming signs of malnutrition: he weighed only 3.6 kg and had a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of 9 cm. His frail appearance and weak cry raised serious concerns about his health, making him eligible for enrolment into the NUMEPLAN program, which focuses on nutritional rehabilitation for malnourished children with appetite.
With the support of dedicated nutritionists and the unwavering commitment of his mother, Dominion embarked on a transformative path to recovery. Over the course of just four months, he regained his health and vitality and was discharged from the NUMEPLAN program, weighing 6 kg with a MUAC of 12 cm. The key to his recovery was not only the guidance his mother received but also the nutritious meals provided, which furnished him with the essential nutrients critical for his growth and development.
Dominion’s story is a beacon of hope and a testament to the Lagos Food Bank’s dedication to reducing malnutrition among young children. It illustrates that with early detection and appropriate support, we can save lives and foster a brighter future for vulnerable children. This journey reinforces the belief that together, we can make a significant difference in the fight against malnutrition.
