Where a child can sit in a classroom without hunger distracting them from learning. Where pregnant women and young children have access to the nutrition they need to grow well. Where families have the resources to access nutritious food, provide for their needs and build more secure futures. Where good food is not wasted while families go without.

That is what a hunger-free Nigeria could look like.

But food security is about more than having food available. It means that people can consistently access enough nutritious food to live healthy and productive lives. It means building systems that help families withstand the challenges that can push them into food insecurity.

At the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, this vision shapes how the organisation responds to hunger.

Through the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), food reaches families who need immediate support. Through NUMEPLAN, mothers and children receive targeted nutrition support during critical stages of growth. EDUFOOD helps ensure that hunger does not stand between children and their education.

But the vision goes further.

The Backyard Family Farming program creates opportunities for households to produce food and strengthen their livelihoods.

A hunger-free Nigeria will not be built by one intervention or one organisation. It will require communities, farmers, businesses, governments, civil society and individuals working together to build food systems that are more resilient, inclusive and sustainable.

The future is one where hunger no longer determines what a child can become, what a mother can provide or what a family can hope for.

That is the Nigeria the Lagos Food Bank Initiative is working towards.
