Nigeria’s food system faces a complex challenge: ensuring that nutritious food reaches the people who need it while reducing food loss, improving livelihoods, and strengthening community resilience. Addressing these challenges requires more than food production; it demands collaboration across agriculture, nutrition, food distribution, and economic empowerment.
Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) plays an important role in this effort by connecting food assistance with sustainable, community-centered interventions that tackle hunger and its underlying causes.
Since its establishment in 2016, LFBI has expanded its reach through programs that support vulnerable households, improve nutrition, recover surplus food and create opportunities for greater self-reliance. The organization reports reaching more than 3.5 million individuals and families across 170 communities in 15 states.
Building a more resilient food system
LFBI’s contribution extends beyond immediate food relief. Through Agricultural Recovery, the initiative helps reduce food loss by redirecting surplus produce to vulnerable communities. Its Family Farming Program supports households, particularly vulnerable women, with agricultural training and resources to grow food and develop sustainable livelihoods. Meanwhile, TEFAP, NUMEPLAN, and EDUFOOD connect food assistance with household nutrition, maternal and child health, and school feeding.
These interventions are powered by volunteers, donors, corporate partners and community organizations. Through the Food Bank Network Nigeria (FBNN), LFBI also collaborates with grassroots organizations to extend food assistance to communities beyond its direct reach.
A collective responsibility
Strengthening Nigeria’s food system requires collaboration across agriculture, business, government and civil society. By reducing food waste, improving access to nutritious food and creating pathways to self-reliance, LFBI demonstrates how food banking can contribute to a more inclusive and resilient food system.
