Every school day, a young student arrives in class ready to learn. But for some children, the biggest challenge is not the lesson on the board; it is the hunger they carried into the classroom.

Before the introduction of school feeding, the hours between breakfast and the end of the school day could feel extremely long. Hunger made it difficult to concentrate, participate, and fully engage with lessons after the first few hours of learning. For children from food-insecure households, the question of what they would eat next could compete with the question of what they were learning.

Then came lunchtime.

Through the Education Enhancement for Food Insecure Students (EDUFOOD) program, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative provides nutritious meals to children during school hours, helping ensure that hunger does not become a barrier to education.

For one student, the difference became noticeable beyond the lunch break. With a nourishing meal available at school, the afternoon classroom no longer felt like a battle against an empty stomach. The child became more attentive, more active in class, and engaged more with lessons.

Teachers noticed the change too.

It was not simply about seeing a child eat. It was about seeing that child participate, concentrate, and remain engaged in learning.

This is the connection between child nutrition and education that school feeding programs in Lagos and across Nigeria seek to address. When children have reliable access to nutritious meals, they have a stronger foundation for learning and wellbeing. School meals can also help encourage attendance and reduce the risk that food insecurity contributes to children disengaging from school.
