Malnutrition is a condition that arise when the body does not get adequate nutrients it needs to function effectively. It can result from a lack of food, insufficient intake of essential nutrients, or an imbalance in the nutrients consumed. While often associated with undernutrition, malnutrition also encompasses overnutrition, where excessive intake of certain nutrients leads to health problems.

As we continue to work towards reducing the prevalence of malnutrition among under five children in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole, we are thrilled to share with you the success story of Peter whose chances of survival have increased through our NUMEPLAN program at Lagos Food Bank Initiative.

Peter was a boy of eight months when he was referred to the Lagos Food Bank by one of our TEFAP beneficiary. He weighed only 3 kg and his mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measured an alarming 7.8 cm which shows that he was severely malnourished (undernutrition). Also, he presented with physical signs of malnutrition including dry and brittle skin, depigmented hair, prominent bones, edema, and distended stomach. He was immediately enrolled for nutrition intervention and with guidance from the nutrition team at the Food Bank, Peter’s mother received crucial nutrition education and nutritious food items tailored to her child’s needs.

After 4 months, the transformation in Peter’s health was remarkable. His weight increased significantly, from 3 kg to 7.2kg and 6.2kg 7.8cm to 12.5cm, reflecting his body’s improved nutritional status.

Peter has been discharged successfully from the program and will be returning for monthly follow-up sessions to monitor his progress and ensure continued health and well-being.

Nutrition is health, and when insufficient or lacking, early recognition and intervention are crucial to prevent malnutrition.
