On Monday 5th August, 2024, through the Nutrition Meals Plan for Vulnerable Mothers and children (NUMEPLAN) program, Lagos Food Bank Initiative reached out to mothers in various communities within Lagos, providing them with adequate nutrition education and support to promote the benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and children.

The experienced nutrition officers and healthcare professionals who volunteer with the food bank, engaged and empowered mothers in various sessions including the nutritional value of breastmilk, how breastfeeding can prevent various forms of childhood malnutrition, techniques for successful breastfeeding, and how to manage common breastfeeding challenges. Mothers were engaged in interactive sessions where they shared their breastfeeding experience, and asked questions to address their specific concerns.

At the end of the program, each mother received a food box filled with nutritious food items and other household items for both themselves and their children, ensuring their access to wholesome food. Through the cloth banking initiative, clothes, toys, and other children’s items were distributed to children who came with their mothers.

In addition to the food boxes received, mothers received water-resistant mattresses for children which were generously donated by our partner, Mouka Limited providing them with much-needed support and comfort.

Speaking to the media team of the food bank, Mrs. Ayeni from Abule Egba community had this to say about the World Breastfeeding Week program. “This program is very helpful especially for young mothers who are new to motherhood and even for pregnant women.
