At the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, women are truly the heartbeat of the organization’s mission. They make up a significant portion of the organization’s over 34,141 registered volunteers, tirelessly leading food distributions, community outreaches, and hands-on support in more than 170 underserved communities across Lagos and beyond. At the same time, they stand at the center of the families served by the organization, particularly through programs designed to tackle hunger and malnutrition directly.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain,” captures the essence of what is witnessed daily through the organization’s work. When women are provided with the nutrition, skills, and stability they need, the gains extend far beyond the individual. Mothers regain strength, their children grow healthier, households become more resilient, and entire communities move toward lasting self-reliance.
The Lagos Food Bank Initiative brings this powerful cycle to life through targeted programs that prioritize women and their families. Through the NUMEPLAN program, consistent nutritious meals and dietary support are delivered to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and their malnourished babies, helping to break cycles of hunger that affect them most and paving the way for healthier futures. Through the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), urgent food relief is provided to vulnerable families, many of which are headed by women in low-income communities. This support helps ease financial pressure, allowing limited household resources to be redirected toward education, healthcare, or new opportunities.
The Family Farming Program also equips women, alongside youth, with training, seeds, tools, and other resources to cultivate vegetables, poultry, and snails through backyard farming. This initiative strengthens household food security, increases income potential, and promotes economic independence within local communities.
These efforts are made possible through the dedication of the organization’s workforce, including committed staff who coordinate logistics, manage warehouses, and ensure that programs operate efficiently. The generosity of donors, corporate partners, and community supporters also plays a critical role by providing the food, funding, and advocacy that enable the Lagos Food Bank Initiative to reach more than 3.5 million beneficiaries through its 10 active programs.
On this International Women’s Day, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative celebrates the remarkable women who volunteer their time, the mothers and grandmothers supported through its programs, the hardworking staff behind its operations, and every donor and partner who continues to stand with the organization. Their time, resources, and belief in their mission help transform immediate relief into lasting empowerment for women and their families.
Here’s to giving thoughtfully and gaining together. Happy International Women’s Day from the Lagos Food Bank Initiative.
