On July 15, 2025, the atmosphere at the Lagos Food Bank Initiative was filled with excitement, purpose, and a strong sense of community as we executed another outreach under the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), an initiative aimed at reducing food insecurity among vulnerable families in underserved communities.

This particular outreach brought together dedicated volunteers, team members, and the esteemed partner for the day Chioma Ikokwu. The event began with a warm welcome from both the Food Bank Team and volunteers, setting the tone for what would become a memorable day of service.

Chioma was taken on a guided tour of the facility, where she was impressed by the development in the Food Bank facility, including the recently launched warehouse that boosts the organization’s capacity to serve more communities effectively, having visited in previous years.

With energy and enthusiasm, Chioma joined hands with volunteers to carefully package food boxes, engaging in cheerful conversations and sharing smiles throughout the process. It wasn’t just about packing, it was about connecting and working together with a shared purpose.

After a brief address, the Executive Director, Dr. Michael Sunbola, took a moment to commend the volunteers’ consistent dedication. “Outreaches happen almost every other day, either here at the Food Bank or in a community, and yet our volunteers always show up with full energy. That commitment is what drives the impact we see,” he noted. He also recognized the ongoing support of Chioma Ikokwu, calling her a true friend of the Food Bank’s mission.

As the food distribution began, the atmosphere grew even more lively. The women, most of whom were elderly, danced and celebrated as they received their food items. Each package was filled with staple, nutritious items curated to feed a family of four for up to two to four weeks.

By the end of the event, many of the beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude, thanking both the partner and the Food Bank for supporting them in such a meaningful way. It was more than serving just food; it was giving dignity and joy. An important reminder that the economically disadvantaged in underserved communities facing food insecurity are not alone.
