On July 25, 2025, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) collaborated with Ayokunle and Tosin Salami to empower women and youth with a transformative outreach in Papa Ashafa Community, Agege, providing beneficiaries of the Family Farming Program with critical resources to start their own urban backyard farms. The support included poultry cages, chicks, feed, multivitamins, and antibiotics, vital tools aimed at boosting household food production and long-term self-reliance.

Designed to strengthen food security and promote self-sufficiency, this initiative equips low-income households with the means to grow their own food which can also serve as income when surplus. The LFBI team, supported by dedicated volunteers, offered hands-on demonstrations and training, ensuring each beneficiary had the knowledge and confidence to begin their journey toward sustainable living.

Dr. Michael Sunbola, Founder and Executive Director of LFBI, expressed sincere appreciation for the continued support from the partners of the day, even in their absence: “Partnerships like this are essential for building resilient households and stronger communities, especially amid the growing socio-economic challenges facing many Nigerians. Our commitment to alleviating hunger, malnutrition, and poverty remains unwavering.”

Among the recipients was Mrs. Alabi, a widowed mother of five, who had completed a two-day intensive training at the Food Bank. Overjoyed, she shared her gratitude: “This is more than just support, it’s a new beginning for me and my family. I’m excited to use these materials to start my own farm and support my children in school.”

In alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 2; No Poverty and Zero Hunger, the Family Farming Initiative equips women and youth with urban farming skills and start-up kits for chickens, snails, and vegetables. The program not only improves access to fresh, nutritious food but also opens up pathways for micro-enterprise, enhancing household nutrition and income.

Through meaningful partnerships with Lagos Food Bank Initiative, organizations and individuals demonstrate how strategic, community-centered partnerships can create lasting change, one backyard farm at a time.
