Malnutrition is a serious threat to children’s health, leading to growth delays and developmental
challenges that can undermine their future potential. Many cases go undetected and untreated,
resulting in long-term consequences. Addressing malnutrition is vital for building healthier
communities and breaking the cycle of poverty. By investing in nutrition, we can ensure that
every child has the opportunity to thrive.
At Lagos Food Bank, we are passionately committed to reducing malnutrition in various
communities. We want to share the inspiring journeys of two children—Sekinat and
Peculiar—who conquered malnutrition through our NUMEPLAN program which provides
nutritious meal support and tailored counseling for each child.
Sekinat was brought to us by her mother after being referred from Agbele Primary Health Center.
When she arrived at just 7 months, she weighed only 3.5 kg and had a MUAC of 9.6 cm.
Similarly, Peculiar, referred from Akowonjo Primary Health Center, was brought in at about the
same age, weighing a mere 4 kg and with a MUAC of 9 cm. These measurements coupled with
alarming physical signs such as thinness, continuous crying, and dry, wrinkled skin indicated that
the children were severely malnourished. After carefully assessment of the children’s nutritional
and health status, they were enrolled into the NUMEPLAN program.
Their mothers received tailored nutrition education and nutritious meals, nurturing Sekinat and
Peculiar back to health. Sekinat gradually gained strength and weight, achieving 7 kg and a
MUAC of 13 cm at 1 year and 1 month. Also, Peculiar now weighs 7.5 kg and has a MUAC of
13.2 cm at 1 year and 2 months. These stories reflect not only the unwavering determination and
the support of Lagos Food Bank but also the incredible commitment of their mothers. Together,
we are transforming lives and providing hope for a brighter future.
