When Isaiah and his mother first arrived at the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, their expressions told two very different stories. While six-month-old Isaiah radiated curiosity and excitement, his mother’s face reflected exhaustion and worry. She had been doing everything she could to improve her son’s growth and development, but the results had yet to show.

During his nutritional assessment, the MUAC tape wrapped around Isaiah’s tiny arm revealed a red reading of 11.5 cm, indicating severe acute malnutrition. As his mother saw the red colour appear once again, her face fell.

“I had tried so hard, but the tape was always red. I was beginning to lose hope,” she later shared.

Having been referred from a Primary Health Centre, Isaiah was immediately enrolled in the Nutritious Meal Plan Intervention for Vulnerable Mothers and Children (NUMEPLAN). The Food Bank nutrition team reassured his mother that with consistent support, proper nutrition, and close monitoring, recovery was possible.

A month later, they returned for a follow-up appointment. This time, the MUAC tape turned yellow. As the colour changed, so did his mother’s expression. The worry that had weighed heavily on her face gave way to a spark of hope. Her joy was impossible to hide and quickly spread to everyone around her.

By the next appointment, the MUAC tape had turned green.

There were smiles, laughter, and even a little dancing. With every colour change, Isaiah’s recovery restored not only his health but also his mother’s confidence and hope for their future.

Then came his third-month review.

At just nine months old, Isaiah walked into the Food Bank warehouse with remarkable energy and joy, leaving the team amazed. The little boy who had once struggled with severe malnutrition had made a remarkable transformation. Isaiah had reached healthy benchmarks for weight-for-age, height-for-age, MUAC-for-age, and head circumference-for-age.

In just three months, Isaiah progressed from a red MUAC measurement of 11.5 cm and a body weight of 5.9 kg at six months old to a healthy green MUAC measurement of 14.5 cm and a body weight of 8 kg at nine months old.

Isaiah’s story is a powerful reminder that with timely intervention, proper nutrition, and dedicated support, recovery is possible. More than a change in numbers, his journey represents renewed hope, resilience, and the life-changing impact of nutrition interventions on vulnerable children and their families.
