When Aisha first arrived at the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, she was carrying more than her baby. She was carrying worry.

Her six-month-old daughter had become increasingly weak and was struggling to gain weight. Aisha had tried to do everything she could with the resources available to her, but she was unsure about what her baby needed nutritionally or how to help her recover.

That changed when she was enrolled in NUMEPLAN, the Nutritious Meal Plan Intervention for Vulnerable Mothers and Children.

The LFBI’s nutrition team assessed the child, provided nutritional support, and most importantly, equipped Aisha with practical knowledge about feeding, nutrition and caring for her child. She received regular follow-up and guidance through bi-weekly visits to the Food Bank, allowing the team to monitor her daughter’s progress and adjust support when necessary.

At first, the changes were small. Then they became impossible to miss.

Her daughter became more active. Her appetite improved. Gradually, she began gaining weight and showing the signs of a healthier, happier child. For Aisha, every improvement brought something she had almost lost along the way: confidence.

“I used to be afraid because I didn’t know what else to do. Now I understand what my child needs, and I know how to care for her better,” she shared.

Aisha’s story reflects a reality faced by many families across Nigeria. Malnutrition is not always caused by a lack of food alone. Limited resources, inadequate nutrition knowledge and difficulty accessing nutritious foods can leave vulnerable mothers and children at greater risk.

This is why interventions like NUMEPLAN matter. Beyond providing immediate nutritional support, LFBI works to equip vulnerable families with knowledge and practical tools that can help children recover and thrive.

One mother. One child. One journey from uncertainty to hope.

But there are many more families waiting for that opportunity.

You can help change their stories. Support Lagos Food Bank Initiative by donating, partnering, volunteering or helping amplify the call for better nutrition for vulnerable mothers and children.

Because every child deserves more than survival. Every child deserves the chance to thrive.
