A child cannot be expected to learn well when hunger is competing for their attention. For many children from food-insecure households, a nutritious meal during the school day is more than food; it can mean better concentration, improved participation, regular attendance, and a greater opportunity to learn.
School feeding programs can also reduce the financial pressure on families, helping make education more accessible. Evidence from the World Food Program shows that school feeding can improve school attendance, while nutrition and education interventions delivered through schools can support broader child well-being.
In Nigeria, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative’s Education Enhancement Intervention for Food Insecure Students (EDUFOOD) demonstrates what this connection can look like in practice. The program provides nutritious meals to children in underserved communities, with the goal of improving school attendance, reducing dropout rates and supporting concentration and comprehension in class. LFBI’s earlier impact reporting also documented the provision of nutritious meals, including fruits, to vulnerable students.
The impact goes beyond the classroom. A nourishing meal can help a child remain focused through lessons rather than learning on an empty stomach, while easing the cost of providing school meals for families. In 2024, LFBI and Itel reached 1,000 children across five schools in Yaba with food and educational materials through EDUFOOD, reinforcing the role of nutrition in keeping vulnerable children engaged in education.
School feeding, therefore, should not be viewed simply as a welfare intervention. It is an investment in learning, health and opportunity. When children have access to nutritious meals during school hours, they are better positioned to participate, learn and make the most of their education.
Through program like EDUFOOD, LFBI continues to demonstrate that nutrition fuels learning. Ensuring that children have both the food and educational support they need is a collective responsibility, and every partnership can help put another nutritious meal and a brighter opportunity within a child’s reach.
