Some moments in community service stay with us long after an outreach ends. Sometimes, it is a conversation. Sometimes, it is something we witness firsthand. And sometimes, it is the realisation that behind every programme, there are lives being shaped by needs that are easy to overlook from a distance.

During a recent school outreach organised by the Lagos Food Bank Initiative in partnership with DOA Law, moments like these came into focus as members of the partner team addressed pupils in their classrooms. Their emotional reflections offered a reminder that seeing the realities children face can make the purpose of service feel much more personal.

For many children, school is more than a place to learn. It is also where access to a nutritious meal can make a difference to their day. Hunger can make it harder to concentrate, participate in lessons and fully engage with learning. Yet these challenges are not always visible in a classroom filled with children eager to learn.

This is why the Lagos Food Bank Initiative’s Education Enhancement Intervention for Food Insecure Students (EDUFOOD) goes beyond providing school meals. It seeks to support children’s nutrition, wellbeing and ability to learn, while easing some of the food-related expenses faced by their families.

Through partnerships such as the one with DOA Law, Ekulo Group, The Elevation Church, and many others, this work becomes a shared responsibility. Partners do more than contribute resources. They have opportunities to engage with the communities their support reaches and see why the work matters beyond the numbers.

These encounters also remind us that addressing hunger requires more than recognising that a need exists. It requires people and organisations willing to respond, consistently and meaningfully.

For the children in these classrooms, the hope is simple: to learn, grow and pursue their potential without hunger becoming an obstacle. For those who choose to serve them, moments like these can renew the sense of purpose behind the work.

Because sometimes, seeing who we serve brings us back to why we started. And sometimes, that reminder is all it takes to strengthen our commitment to keep showing up.
