International Youth Day, observed on August 12th, highlights the vital role of young people in society and the challenges they face. In Nigeria, with its large and dynamic youth population, this day underscores the potential of youth to drive community development and social change. Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) exemplifies how mobilizing youth can significantly impact community development by addressing food insecurity, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, empowering households, and enhancing community resilience. 

Nigeria has one of the youngest populations globally, with over 60% under the age of 25. This demographic presents both opportunities and challenges. While youth have the potential to drive innovation and economic growth, they also face high unemployment, limited education access, and social instability. Youth involvement in community development is crucial for several reasons: 

• Innovation, Leadership and Creativity: Young people bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to community issues. 

• Energy and Enthusiasm: Their energy can drive initiatives and inspire others. 

Founded in 2016, LFBI is dedicated to alleviating hunger and enhancing food security in Lagos and beyond. The initiative focuses on food relief, sustainable agriculture, and community development, actively involving youth in these efforts.

Some of the food bank’s youth-centric programs include;

1. Volunteer Program: This program admits young people as volunteers for food distribution, food rescue and recovery, and outreach preparation activities. Volunteers gain valuable skills and develop a deeper understanding of community challenges. 
2. Educational Workshops and Training: LFBI conducts sessions on nutrition and sustainability led by young professionals, providing youth with knowledge and leadership opportunities. 
3. School Feeding Program (EDUFOOD): This program provides nutritious meals in low-cost private schools, involving volunteers in meal preparation to improve child nutrition and education, fostering community development and a sense of responsibility. 
4. Family Farming Program: This initiative supports local farmers and promotes sustainable agriculture, with youth participating in farming training and community set-up projects. 
5. Advocacy and Awareness Campaigns: LFBI engages youth in campaigns to raise awareness about food security, leveraging social media to mobilize community support and develop advocacy skills.

LFBI’s interventions have led to notable successes both in the lives of the beneficiaries and volunteers. Volunteers can now initiate their own community-based projects and inspire educational workshops to impact positive change in their various communities.
