On Saturday, 15th of July, 2023, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) in partnership with Global Foodbanking Network (GFN) commenced its community development program with an outreach at the food bank warehouse aimed at providing itsbeneficiaries with food items to help ease the economic effects of subsidy removal through the Subsidy Removal Food Aid Program (SRFAP).

The outreach was a huge success and the impact was instant as beneficiaries didn’t hesitate to express their delight in sight of renewed hope for all. The Executive Director of Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Dr. Michael Sunbola, expressed his gratitude to the partners of the day, and to the esteemed volunteers that showed up in great numbers to assist in the distribution of food boxes to the beneficiaries. He also noted that the subsidy aid although a 3 month program is set to provide the necessary nutritional requirements for the beneficiaries of the food bank.

Through the Cloth Bank Nigeria program of the organization, the beneficiaries also received clothing items, shoes, bag and other items for the families as this will enable them focus their income on other important bills such as rent, schools fees etc.

One of the beneficiaries of the day, Mrs Ayo; a widowed mother of 2, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the team and partners as she noted the hardship of the economy on her and her children.

SRFAP is the most recent program initiative of LFBI, dedicated to providing hunger-relief items for vulnerable families due to the sudden increase in general market prices as a result of the removal of subsidy. The program initiative is to last for 3 months as the organization looks to help curb the economic effect of subsidy removal in low-cost communities.
