At the end of a busy day, a restaurant can have perfectly good food left over simply because there were fewer customers than expected.
The meals may still be fresh. The food may still be perfectly safe to eat. But with business closing and no one left to serve, there may be nowhere for it to go.
So it gets thrown away.
Now imagine that, somewhere nearby, a family is struggling to put a meal on the table.
The problem is not always that food does not exist. Sometimes, the problem is that the food that exists never reaches the people who need it.
This is one of the gaps the Lagos Food Bank Initiative is working to close through its Virtual Food Banking Network.
The model connects food vendors, restaurants and food logistics companies with LFBI’s network of volunteers. When surplus food becomes available, nearby volunteers can collect it and help redistribute it to vulnerable individuals and households.
Since the beginning of 2026, the Virtual Food Banking model has helped rescue 111,682 kg of food, reaching hundreds of individuals with immediate relief.
While large-scale food recovery efforts often focus on bulk donations, Virtual Food Banking creates room for the smaller, everyday surpluses that can otherwise be overlooked: prepared meals left at closing, unclaimed orders or food that has nowhere else to go.
And this is where volunteers become an important part of the solution.
A volunteer nearby can turn a surplus meal into nourishment for someone who needs it. They help create the connection between food that would have been discarded and people experiencing immediate hunger.
The distance between surplus and need may only be a few kilometres. What matters is having people who are ready to close that gap.
The Lagos Food Bank Initiative is currently expanding its Virtual Food Banking volunteer network across Yaba, Surulere, Victoria Island, Ogba and Berger.
You can help close the gap.
If you live around any of these locations and can support food pickups and redistribution, join the Virtual Food Banking Network. Your time could help turn food that might have been wasted into a meal for someone who needs it.
