For many families in Lagos, support from the Lagos Food Bank Initiative often begins at moments of urgent need. It arrives when meals are uncertain and survival feels fragile. But for the organisation, the goal has never been limited to emergency relief alone. It is also about what comes after.

Beyond immediate food assistance, there is a deeper focus on helping families build stability that lasts. This is done through programs that combine nutrition support with practical skills and income generating opportunities.

One clear example is the Family Farming initiative. In communities such as Agege and Dopemu, families are trained to grow vegetables and rear small livestock in limited urban spaces. With access to basic tools, seedlings, and guidance, small backyard gardens begin to take shape. For many households, these spaces reduce daily food expenses and sometimes provide extra produce that can be sold. Over time, what begins as a survival strategy becomes a source of resilience, especially for women and young people trying to support their families in difficult economic conditions.

Another key effort is the Job Placement program. Here, beneficiaries are assisted in preparing CVs based on their skills and experience and are connected to available job opportunities across different sectors. For many participants, this becomes a turning point. A temporary reliance on food support gradually shifts as steady income begins to replace uncertainty. Work in areas such as services, transport, and domestic roles helps struggling families regain a sense of stability and independence.

Together, these interventions reflect a broader philosophy. Assistance is not only about meeting immediate needs. It is also about restoring dignity and creating opportunity. Families are not viewed as passive recipients but as active participants in rebuilding their own futures.

The challenges of urban poverty in Lagos remain significant, but these programs show that progress is possible when support is combined with empowerment.

To continue expanding these efforts, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative invites partners, donors, and volunteers to support its work. Contributions help strengthen training programmes, expand urban farming initiatives, and create more employment opportunities for vulnerable families across Lagos.
