On Saturday, August 30th, 2025, the streets of Lagos Island came alive with chants, laughter, vuvuzelas, and whistles as hundreds joined the Lagos Food Bank Initiative Walkathon 2025, a colorful movement with a serious mission: to raise awareness and support for the Food Bank’s school-feeding program that targets food-insecure children.
From the very beginning, the atmosphere was electric. Volunteers, corporate teams, celebrities, and guests gathered with one common purpose: to walk so that children in underserved communities can learn on a full stomach.
The day began with a flurry of exciting pre-walk activities. Children and adults alike lined up for face painting, while groups stretched and danced during the lively aerobics session anchored by public figures. Cameras rolled for on-the-spot interviews, and friends captured memories at the photo booths, all building anticipation for the big walk.
When the walk officially began, the crowd moved in unison, creating a wave of energy through the streets. Corporate partners walked proudly alongside volunteers, while celebrities inspired cheers from onlookers. At every step, the message was clear: hunger is a battle we can only win together.
The Walkathon drew support from a wide network of stakeholders. Corporate brands showed up in numbers, underlining their commitment to corporate social responsibility. Celebrity ambassadors such as Kate Henshaw, ShankComics, Taaooma, Elozonam, Michael Ejoor, and more, lent their voices and presence to amplify the cause, while LFBI volunteers, the powerhouse of the organization, ensured everything ran smoothly.
Behind the scenes, crucial support came from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Safety Commission, who worked tirelessly to manage traffic and crowd flow, ensuring safety for participants and road users. Their efforts made it possible for the event to shine without disruptions.
Notable media houses were also present to support the cause, and document the historic movement of solidarity and purpose, amplifying the voices of advocates to ensure impact on the growing number of out-of-school children in the nation.
But the LFBI Walkathon was more than just a day of fun, it was about impact. Funds and resources raised from the event will power the Food Bank’s Education Enhancement Intervention for Food Insecure Students (EDUFOOD), which provides nutritious daily meals to children in low-income communities.
The initiative doesn’t just fill stomachs, it keeps children in school, improves concentration, and gives them a fair chance at building a brighter future.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Michael Sunbola, Executive Director and Founder of LFBI, highlighted the importance of the collective effort, “This Walkathon proves that when communities, brands, and individuals come together, we can make a real difference in the lives of children.”
Corporate partners echoed the same sentiment, with one representative sharing, “Walking today wasn’t just symbolic, it was a reminder that every step we take can help change the story of a child battling hunger.”
The resounding success of the Walkathon is only the beginning. For LFBI, it signals the start of bigger strides in the fight against hunger. With strengthened partnerships, renewed public support, and expanded awareness, the organization is more determined than ever to feed the future.
As the sun set on the Walkathon, the message lingered in the air: no child should have to learn on an empty stomach.
The LFBI Walkathon 2025 was more than a walk, it was a movement. And together, the walk continues until every child doesn’t have to choose between hunger and quality education.
