Early childhood malnutrition remains a critical concern in under-deserved communities, where limited access to nutritious food and knowledge of proper feeding practices often endanger young lives. Abibat’s story is a testament to how timely intervention and caregiver empowerment can restore hope and health.

At just 2 years and 6 months old, Abibat weighed only 6 kg, with a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of 9.5 cm, a clear indicator of severe acute malnutrition. She was fragile, silent, and withdrawn. Her tiny frame told a heartbreaking story of hunger, struggle, and vulnerability. This deprivation robbed her of more than just weight, it took away her energy, her smile, and the chance at a healthy start to life.

However, through the NUMEPLAN program by Lagos Food Bank, Abibat received close monitoring, consistent nutrition, and targeted support. Her caregiver was provided with nutrition education and hygiene counselling to ensure proper feeding and care practices at home. This combined effort created a nurturing environment for Abibat’s recovery.

As part of the program, Abibat received nutrient-dense meals, and her caregiver received regular guidance on how to prepare and portion meals adequately.  For each bi-weekly visit, her weight improved, and her MUAC readings gradually increased. Her once frail body grew stronger. She could finally stand without support, and her laughter, once buried beneath weakness, filled the room. After noticing the change, her caregiver happily shared, “She dey eat now, even ask for more when the food finish. I no believe say na the same Abibat”.

The result? Remarkable. In just 3 months, Abibat’s health transformed. She now weighs 9kg, with an improved MUAC of 12.9cm. Her once dull eyes now sparkle with life. She is stronger, more active, and full of energy.

Abibat’s journey demonstrates the powerful impact of nutrition intervention programs like NUMEPLAN, not just in saving lives but in restoring dignity, health, and hope. Today, she is being discharged from the program not just as a survivor but as a thriving and shining child with a bright future ahead.
