On Friday, 15th November 2024, people living with diabetes mellitus gathered at the Lagos Food Bank warehouse in Mangoro, Ikeja, to mark World Diabetes Day. Over 40 beneficiaries participated in the event, part of the Nutrition Intervention for Diabetes Self-Management (NIDS) program, which aims to empower diabetics with education and diabetes-friendly foods.

The day began with health screenings, where medical professionals—including doctors, nurses, and dietitians—checked blood glucose and blood pressure levels, and reviewed participants’ recent diets to guide personalized counseling. A session on moderate exercises to improve glucose control followed, providing practical tips for managing diabetes through movement.

After a refreshing fruit break, attendees engaged in an informative diabetes education session, where dietitians answered questions and offered advice tailored to each participant’s needs. Mr. Olorunfemi, one of the beneficiaries, shared a heartfelt testimonial, saying “I’ve learned a lot today about managing diabetes. The diet and exercise tips will really help”.

The event concluded with all beneficiaries receiving food boxes filled with diabetes-friendly food items, carefully selected to help them manage their blood sugar levels and maintain optimal health. Another beneficiary, Mrs. Olumila, expressed her gratitude for the food package, saying, “It is exactly what I need to control my blood sugar, thank you Lagos Food Bank.”
