When Bola, a long-serving and consistent volunteer, first walked into the Lagos Food Bank Initiative’s previous operational warehouse in Dopemu, Lagos, she had a different perspective on food insecurity. Like many people, she had heard about hunger and seen the statistics, but it had always felt like a distant problem. That changed when she began volunteering.

She saw families arrive seeking food support. She watched volunteers work together to pack food boxes and prepare for community outreaches. She listened to stories of mothers struggling to feed their children and saw the relief on beneficiaries’ faces when they received support.

Bola’s story is shared by thousands of volunteers who continue to support the Lagos Food Bank Initiative each year. Students, professionals, retirees, business owners, and corporate teams all arrive with different backgrounds and motivations, but they are united by a common desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable families across Lagos.

Today, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative is supported by a network of more than 30,000 volunteers. Some have faithfully served for years. Others participate through employee volunteering programmes organised by their companies as part of corporate social responsibility initiatives. Many young people also volunteer to gain practical experience while contributing to a cause that transforms lives. Their journeys may be different, but they share one thing: they have seen the need and chosen to act.
