The atmosphere at the Lagos Food Bank Initiative warehouse in Ikeja was filled with excitement, warmth, and compassion as indigenous comedian, content creator, cinematographer, and social media sensation Maryam Apaokagi-Greene, popularly known as Taaooma, partnered with the organization for a special outreach through the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) on the 7th of May, 2026.
The outreach was aimed at supporting vulnerable women and households facing food insecurity across underserved communities in Lagos State. Families gathered at the warehouse hopeful for relief during a time when rising food costs and economic hardship continue to place immense pressure on low-income households.
From the moment Taaooma arrived, the warehouse came alive with energy and joy. Beyond the excitement her presence brought, the day quickly became centered on something much deeper; human connection and impact. Volunteers worked in unison with Taaooma and her team to sort, package, and distribute food boxes containing staple food items essential for household nutrition and wellbeing.
Speaking during the outreach, Taaooma emphasized the importance of using influence to uplift communities and support people in need. “It means a lot to be here today. We often see the struggles people go through online or hear about them, but being here physically and meeting these families reminds you that hunger is real and many people genuinely need support. I’m grateful for the opportunity to partner with Lagos Food Bank Initiative to make a difference, even if it’s one family at a time.”
The outreach provided food support to women and caregivers who expressed deep appreciation for the intervention. Many beneficiaries shared how difficult it has become to provide nutritious meals for their families due to the rising cost of living.
One beneficiary, Mrs. Okafor, a mother of five from Oworonshoki, an underserved community in Lagos, spoke emotionally about the impact of the support received. “Things have been very difficult for my family. Sometimes I worry about how to feed my children every day. Receiving this support today has brought relief to my home. I feel remembered and cared for, and I’m truly grateful.”
The Executive Director/Founder of Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Dr. Michael Sunbola reiterated the organization’s commitment to combating hunger and malnutrition through strategic partnerships and sustainable interventions. “At Lagos Food Bank Initiative, we understand that food insecurity goes beyond hunger, it affects health, dignity, productivity, and the future of families. Partnerships like this help us extend hope and relief to vulnerable households while raising awareness about the urgent realities many communities face daily. We are grateful to Taaooma for lending her voice and platform to this cause.”
The Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) remains one of the organization’s core interventions focused on providing immediate food relief to vulnerable households while promoting equitable access to nutrition and improved wellbeing.
As the outreach came to a close, smiles, laughter, and heartfelt conversations filled the warehouse, powerful reminders that acts of compassion, no matter how simple, can restore hope in extraordinary ways.
Through collaborations like this, Lagos Food Bank Initiative continues to strengthen its mission of fighting hunger, reducing food insecurity, and ensuring that vulnerable families across Lagos communities are not left behind.
