Severe malnutrition is a silent crisis, stealing the potential of children and threatening their lives. At Lagos Food Bank, we are committed to rewriting these stories with hope and health. This is the inspiring story of Laurat, a 24-month-old girl whose life took a miraculous turn through our NUMEPLAN program.

Laurat was initially healthy, but after an illness, she rapidly deteriorated into a state of severe malnutrition. When she was referred to the NUMEPLAN program, she was suffering from symptoms such as extreme wasting, energy level depletion, persistent lethargy, and frequent illnesses. Her condition was critical and required immediate nutrition intervention.

Upon enrollment, Laurat was placed on a personalized therapeutic nutrition plan including ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF), nutrient-dense meals, and high-protein diets tailored to meet her needs. She was placed on a bi-weekly visit where we closely monitor her progress.

During each bi-weekly visit, her caregiver received nutrition counseling, meal preparation techniques, and nutritious food items for herself and Laurat.

Now discharged at 2 years and 3 months, her weight improved from 5.7kg to 8.5kg, her mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) increased from 9.8cm to 14cm, and her overall health showed remarkable progress. Within three months, Laurat went from being lethargic and frail to a vibrant, thriving toddler with no signs of malnutrition.

At Lagos Food Bank, through our NUMEPLAN program, we combine therapeutic nutrition, nutrition education, and consistent monitoring to reverse the effects of malnutrition because we believe every child deserves the chance to grow, learn, and thrive.
