“I am very happy, they promised to bring the materials and they have done so” said Mrs Bashiru Afusat as she excitedly recounted her training at the food bank as she received her backyard farming materials from the food bank team and its volunteers.

On Saturday 17th February, 2024 the Lagos Food Bank equipped its registered beneficiaries with agricultural resources to start up their urban/backyard farms through its family farming program within Agege community. After undergoing a practical and theoretical based training at the food bank, each beneficiary received materials for their vegetable farms and cages for their poultry and snail farms.

Present at the outreach was the founder/executive director of the food bank Dr Michael Sunbola stated that the objective of the program was to reduce the prevalence of hunger and poverty among low income families by creating access to fresh and healthy food, through backyard farms thereby promoting food security and financial stability.

Adunni, a first time volunteer of LFBI when asked about her experience at the outreach, mentioned that she was proud to be a part of the food bank and also noted “The food bank gives its beneficiaries a sustainable source of income to enable them to have the purchasing power for them and their families.”
