Child survival remains a critical global challenge, especially in a resource-poor environment where malnutrition significantly heightens the risks of disease and death among children under the age of five. Tackling this issue requires a multifaceted approach, ensuring that young children receive adequate nutrition is fundamental. Proper nourishment not only supports their immediate health, but also enhances the effectiveness of other interventions aimed at improving child survival.
Lagos Food Bank Initiative is excited to share the inspiring stories of Adeola and Fauziyah, two babies whose remarkable journeys from severe undernutrition to vibrant health highlight the profound impact of early detection and community-based intervention for malnourishment. Adeola, just nine months old, arrived the food bank with visible signs of malnutrition – pale skin, severe thinness, swollen abdomen among others – and a critical weight of only 5 kg, with a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of just 11 cm. Fauziyah, a one-year-old, was similarly undernourished, weighing 5.4 kg and with a MUAC of 10.4 cm.
Thanks to the NUMEPLAN program, the dedicated nutrition team, and the unwavering commitment of Adeola’s and Fauziyah’s caregivers, these children embarked on a transformative path to recovery. During their bi-weekly visits, Adeola and Fauziyah received essential nutritional support, and their caregivers were educated on important feeding practices. The results were astounding: Adeola’s health improved dramatically, leading to her successful discharge from the program at one year with a weight of 7.5 kg and a MUAC of 12.7 cm. Fauziyah also achieved a successful recovery, reaching a weight of 7.5 kg and a MUAC of 13 cm at one year and three months.
These recoveries not only restored Adeola’s and Fauziyah’s health but also renewed hope for their caregivers, demonstrating the power of targeted nutritional intervention.
After discharge, they will continue to receive monthly follow-ups to ensure their health remains stable and there is no relapse. The NUMEPLAN program exemplifies the effectiveness of timely, community-driven efforts in combating malnutrition and promoting child health and survival.
This is a great opportunity to appreciate product donors for supporting the vision and mission to end the different forms of malnutrition affecting young children and lactating mothers.
