When Joshua’s mother first arrived at the Lagos Food Bank Initiative’s Nutrition and Maternal Education Program (NUMEPLAN), she carried more than her visibly malnourished son; she carried the weight of uncertainty. With little formal education and a language barrier that made communication challenging, it was easy to assume that understanding and implementing the nutritional guidance needed for Joshua’s recovery would be difficult.

But she proved that love, determination, and a willingness to learn are more powerful than any perceived limitation.

The journey was not without its challenges. In the early weeks, every counseling session required patience, repetition, and practical demonstrations to ensure she understood how to prepare nutritious meals and care for her son. Yet she never missed an opportunity to learn. At every bi-weekly appointment, she returned eager to ask questions, apply what she had learned, and do everything possible to improve Joshua’s health.

Slowly, the transformation became evident.

With consistent nutrition counselling, regular monitoring, and a mother’s unwavering commitment, Joshua’s health steadily improved. His weight increased from 3.2 kg to 4.9 kg, marking a remarkable recovery and earning him a successful discharge from the program.

What once appeared to be barriers became the very foundation of their success. Joshua’s mother’s commitment turned every lesson into action and every challenge into progress.

Reflecting on their journey, she shared:

“I may not have gone to school, but I learned everything I needed to help my son get well. Seeing him healthy again fills my heart with joy. I am grateful to the Lagos Food Bank Initiative for teaching me that with the right knowledge and determination, my child could have a better future.”

Joshua’s recovery is a powerful reminder that combating malnutrition is not only about providing nutritional support; it’s about equipping caregivers with practical knowledge, building confidence, and empowering families to create lasting change.

Today, Joshua leaves NUMEPLAN healthier, stronger, and with a brighter future ahead, while his mother leaves as living proof that determination, supported by the right guidance, can transform a child’s life.
