“Worship is more than words; it is love expressed through action.”

The words shared by Dr. Michael Sunbola, Founder and Executive Director of the Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI), captured the heart of the partnership as W.A.L.S. Initiative (Worship As A Living Sacrifice) joined the Food Bank for a special Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) outreach on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

At the LFBI warehouse in Mangoro, Ikeja, members of W.A.L.S. joined staff and volunteers to package and distribute nutritious food boxes to resilient women and families from underserved communities experiencing food insecurity. The outreach offered a practical expression of the values shared by both organisations: serving others and responding to real needs within the community.

A faith-based initiative focused on meaningful conversations, worship, community, outreach and practical support, W.A.L.S. has placed particular emphasis this season on creating spaces where women feel empowered and supported. At LFBI, that focus took a practical form as families received essential food supplies to help ease the pressure of meeting their daily food needs.

In his remarks, Dr. Michael Sunbola appreciated W.A.L.S. Initiative for choosing to partner with LFBI and highlighted the importance of faith communities translating love and service into practical support for families experiencing food insecurity. He emphasised that worship should extend beyond words and find expression in how people respond to the needs around them.

Omolola Giwa-Akinola, Convener of the W.A.L.S. Initiative, also addressed the gathering. She appreciated everyone who contributed to the outreach and shared more about the work of W.A.L.S., drawing from biblical encouragement on love and emphasising the importance of expressing that love through practical care for others.

She also invited attendees to the W.A.L.S. 2026 gathering, scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Solution Arena, Onipanu, Lagos, with a focus on empowering the whole woman in every season.

From packaging to distribution, the outreach brought the message of service into practice. W.A.L.S. members worked alongside LFBI staff and volunteers to prepare and distribute the food boxes, while beneficiaries received immediate support for their households.

For the families reached, the food support provided essential supplies at a time when meeting everyday food needs can be difficult. The interaction with the W.A.L.S. team and volunteers also reinforced the human connection behind the intervention: people showing up, serving and responding to a need in their community.

Through TEFAP, LFBI continues to provide immediate food assistance to households experiencing food insecurity.
