When Mrs. Olabisi lost her husband, life changed in ways she never imagined. Beyond the grief came the daily struggle of keeping food on the table. Like many widows across Lagos, she found herself stretching every naira, worrying less about tomorrow’s dreams and more about whether there would be enough for the next meal.

Then came a reminder that she was not alone.

Mrs. Olabisi was among the widows reached during the Lagos Food Bank Initiative’s International Widows’ Day outreach, where she received food support through the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). As she reflected on the challenges she had faced since losing her husband, she expressed heartfelt gratitude that widows had not been forgotten during such difficult economic times. Her story mirrors the experience of countless women whose greatest struggle is no longer grief alone, but the daily challenge of providing for their families.

For years, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative has remained committed to supporting widows through targeted food relief and long-term empowerment initiatives. In 2023, the organisation’s Scarcity Relief Outreach provided nutritious food and essential supplies to aged women and widows facing severe economic hardship. The following year, International Widows’ Day once again became an opportunity to restore hope to vulnerable women across underserved communities.

That commitment continued in 2025 when the organisation, with the support of a long-standing partner, S.A.L.T, reached 300 widows and their households during another International Widows’ Day outreach. Among the beneficiaries was Mrs. Elizabeth Ajayi, a widow raising five children in the Mushin community. She spoke of the immense hardship she had endured while trying to provide for her family and offered heartfelt prayers in appreciation of the support she received. Many other widows echoed similar sentiments, with or without a microphone, reminding everyone present that behind every food box is a family fighting to survive.

Most recently, actress and Lagos Food Bank Ambassador, Kate Henshaw chose to celebrate her 55th birthday by partnering with the Lagos Food Bank Initiative to support 55 widows through TEFAP. Alongside nutritious food boxes, each widow received financial support, demonstrating that compassion can restore dignity just as much as it relieves hunger.

While emergency food relief provides immediate hope, the organisation also believes in building lasting resilience. Through the Family Farming Programme, widows are equipped with training, seedlings, livestock, and practical support to grow their own food and generate income. The goal is not only to ease today’s burden but to create opportunities for a more secure tomorrow.

Today, there are many more women like Mrs. Olabisi and Mrs. Elizabeth Ajayi. Their names may be different, but their stories are remarkably similar. They are mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and breadwinners doing everything they can to keep their families afloat. Through the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative continues to remind them that they are seen, valued, and never alone.
