Hafisat, a mother of three, once stood quietly at a food distribution point in Oworonshoki, holding a food box tightly against her chest. After a long pause, she said softly, “Today, my children will sleep with full stomachs.”

Her words reflect the reality many vulnerable families across Lagos face every day. Rising food prices, economic hardship, flooding, and urban poverty continue to make access to nutritious meals difficult for thousands of households. Yet they also remind us that hunger is not an impossible challenge. With compassion, collective action, and sustained support, lives can change.

As the world marks World Hunger Day 2026 under the theme “The End of Hunger is in Our Hands”, the message speaks directly to the mission of the Lagos Food Bank Initiative. Hunger is driven by poverty, inequality, food waste, and limited access to nutrition, but these are challenges that can be addressed when people and communities work together.

Over the years, the Lagos Food Bank Initiative has supported vulnerable families across more than 170 communities through programs focused on food relief, nutrition support, and long term resilience. Through initiatives such as the Temporary Food Assistance Program, struggling households receive food support during difficult periods. NUMEPLAN continues to provide nutritional support for vulnerable mothers and malnourished children, while Family Farming and Green Harvest help women and young people grow food within their communities and strengthen household food security.

Behind every outreach, food box, and meal distributed are people who chose to make a difference. Volunteers giving their time, donors making contributions, and partners lending support continue to demonstrate the power of collective responsibility in the fight against hunger.

Despite these efforts, the need remains urgent. Across Lagos, many families still skip meals to survive and stretch limited income. For the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, World Hunger Day is not only a moment of awareness, but also a reminder that the fight against hunger requires continued action.

The organisation encourages individuals, institutions, and communities to support this mission through donations, volunteering, partnerships, and advocacy. Every contribution helps move vulnerable families closer to stability, dignity, and hope.

The end of hunger is truly in our hands. Together, compassion can have a lasting impact for families across Lagos.
